Lions, tigers and brews

Friday is one of the last opportunities to get drunk with the animals, as the Memphis Zoo is holding its last Macy’s Zoo Brew of the season.

As guests venture through the zoo, local breweries and other companies will handout beer samples to guests as they enjoy live music being preformed by local bands.

With beers made in Memphis and from around the world, the event will be an exciting time for zoo visitors, explained Abbey Dane, seven-year marketing and communication director at the Memphis Zoo.

“Zoo Brew is one of the biggest beers tasting events in the city, and will have beers from all over the world to sample,” Dane said.

Macy’s Zoo Brew will feature over 34 breweries sampling multiple versions of the beer they have to offer. This will include beers from Belgium, Germany, United Kingdom and multiple states in the United States.

With over 117 varies of ales and lagers to try, locals will get an opportunity to try different wheat’s, lagers, pale ales and stouts all in one place.

“Zoo Brew is one of our best fundraisers due to atmosphere of the event and all the cool perks that come with it,” Dane said. “All the money from our special events goes to general zoo operations, food costs for the animals and payroll for employees.”

Local beer makers such as Wiseacre Brewing Company and Ghost Rivers Brewing Company will be in attendance as well sampling local favorites.

Ghost River plans on sampling 2011 Great American Beer Festival silver medal winner Riverbank Red, while Wiseacre will feature Tiny Bomb and an Ananda IPA.

Zoo members can also take advantage of a discounted rate for regular or VIP tickets.

VIP members will be entitled to wine tasting as well a free hors d’oeuvres such as pretzels, hotdogs, hamburgers and barbecue nachos as well as early admission.

The VIP lounge will also have live music preformed by local bands such as Twin Soul, Dingo Entertainment and Hollywood.

People interested in becoming a member of the Memphis Zoo can join via phone, internet or in person at the zoo at various different levels of membership.

Family’s can join at a rate of $99 a year, while individual membership can be attained for a $45 yearly rate.

Media Sponsor Q107.5 teamed with main sponsor Macy’s to help bring Zoo Brew to Memphis, with the help of Budweiser of Memphis.

Macy’s Zoo Brew is strictly for people over the age of 21, and will cost $40 for non-members. VIP is $70 for non-members, but only $60 for members of the Memphis Zoo.
