Up 'Til Dawn will host a fundraiser Friday in front of the University Center called "To the Wall."
Up 'Til Dawn is a registered student organization at the University of Memphis dedicated to raising money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
During "To the Wall," members of Up 'Til Dawn will tape people to a wall.
Cassie Pennington, a morale captain for Up 'Til Dawn, said she wanted to do something a little different for a fundraiser.
"I mean, how often do you really get to see someone taped to a wall," Pennington, an undecided sophomore, said. "I thought it'd be fun and appealing to people as they're walking by before the pep rally."
Pennington, who wasn't a member last year, said she was introduced to the group at its finale fundraiser where she was inspired by the patient speakers and the amount of money the organization had raised so far, which at the time was $105,328.
"This is really important, because it takes $1.8 million a day to run St. Jude. We've really made it our mission to let the patients of St. Jude know that the University of Memphis is here for them," Pennington said.
This year Up 'Til Dawn plans to surpass last year's donations by raising their goal to $150,000.
"This event is one of our side-fundraising events. We have a few primary ones throughout the year, and this is one of our smaller ones," John Campbell, a faculty advisor for the organization and the University's senior coordinator of leadership programs, said. "We have three volunteers, myself included, who are willing to be taped to a wall."
Along with Campbell, two students will also be duct-taped to UC columns-Ricky Kirby, president of the Student Government Association, and Dixon Williams, an UTD executive board member.
"I've only been told that no matter what I'm going to be taped to a wall. It seems fun to me, and it's for a good cause," Williams, a senior marketing major, said. "Who can really say they've been taped to a wall?"
During the annual "Letter Writing Party" Wednesday, students sent letters to friends and family asking them to donate to St. Jude, and Campbell said he hopes that this fundraiser has just as good of a turnout.
"This is a new idea for this group, and I'm excited to see what the turnout is and how much we can raise to benefit St. Jude. I think there are enough students on campus who will jump at the opportunity to tape me to a wall," Campbell said. "Anyone on campus Friday should come spend a couple of dollars and do something silly for a good cause."
