UM officer testifies in Braunstein case

A University of Memphis police officer testified for the Manhattan District Attorney Friday in the sexual abuse trial of Peter Braunstein, who was arrested on campus in 2005.

Officer James Johnson testified about arresting Braunstein Dec. 16, 2005 near Rawls Hall.

"He was subpoenaed to testify on Friday," said Derek Myers, the assistant director of public safety for The University. "He testified about his role in capturing Braunstein."

Johnson testified that he used pepper spray to subdue Braunstein, who was stabbing himself in the neck and would not drop his knife.

Braunstein is accused of impersonating a firefighter and sexually abusing a woman for 13 hours on Halloween in 2005 in New York City.

After more then six weeks on the run, Braunstein was arrested on campus after "America's Most Wanted" had shown a re-enactment of his crime only hours prior.
