Parting words from the staff

It's that time of year again. Time for the seniors of The University of Memphis to move on to bigger, greener pastures. And I will be joining them this year.

And I can't help but think if I was right or wrong about certain things.

Should I have gotten a journalism degree instead of a political science one to start off with?

Should I have even come back for another degree?

Should I have even moved with my parents to Tennessee, when I could have gone to Stephen F. Austin back in Texas?

But what's done is done. Life goes on.

One of the reporters was listening to graduation songs in the Helmsman news room today, when he played Vitamin C's "Graduation" song. That song was popular back in 2000, when I graduated high school.

There is a line in the song that says, "So we talked all night about the rest of our lives, where we're gonna be when we're 25."

Well, I'm 25, and I'm graduating (again) from college.

This wasn't where I thought I was going to be when I was 25. I had all sorts of ideas where I was going to be when I was 25, when I was a freshman at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga back in August 2000.

I still had those ideas when I graduated from UTC in May 2004.

Then I soon realized that I had chosen the wrong major in the first place. Maybe I should have listened to my heart instead of my brain in telling me what I should have majored in.

So back to school I went.

I was lucky though. Almost all my credits from UTC transferred to Memphis, and I only had to take a few classes.

So in two years, I'm graduating with another bachelor's degree. And I can't help but think that now things are right.

Henry David Thoreau said "Go confidently in the directions of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined."

You know, Thoreau was right. Do what you love, love what you do.

Most people after they graduate, get bogged down in the corporate life and forget things like this. Just try to make sure that you are where you actually want to be in life.

To the seniors of 2007: remember this place. Remember the professors you had, the friends you made and the memories you made. It's true what they say, college is the best years of our lives.

To the undergrads: make sure that you are doing what you want to later in life. If business is truly where you want to be, then major in that. if it's something else, then go with that. It's never too late to change, unless you're about to graduate. But what undergrad hasn't switched majors a few times? I know I did.

Just don't ever forget where you thought that you where going to be when you were 25. Where you actually end up might just surprise you.
