He is 6-foot-9, 235 pounds and the No. 1 recruit of 2007 according to Rivals.com. He is also committed to play for Kansas State next season - for now.
Following the Nike Hoops Summit game at FedExForum this weekend, Michael Beasley, a senior at Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass., told local reporters that he is interested in playing for Memphis. Beasley's comments came the week after Bob Huggins resigned as head coach of Kansas State after one season. Huggins accepted the head coaching position at his alma mater, West Virginia.
"I'm really thinking about Memphis right now," Beasley said in a statement. "N.C. State and Florida State, too."
When Huggins initially resigned, Kansas State athletic director Tim Weiser said he would not consider releasing any of the school's recruits from their Letters of Intent until after a replacement for Huggins had been found.
The Wildcats promoted assistant Frank Martin to head coach last week. Martin was Huggins' main recruiting coordinator last season and helped Kansas State secure one of the top incoming freshman classes in the country this year.
As of now, it remains uncertain as to whether or not Beasley will be released from his LOI at Kansas State and if he would leave even if he was allowed to re-open his recruitment.
Lamar Chance, basketball media relations director at Memphis, said Tiger officials could not comment on another school's recruit or on an uncommitted recruit.
Beasley averaged 28 points per game and 16 rebounds as a senior at Notre Dame Prep last season. He scored 23 points at the McDonald's All-American game in March and was named the Most Valuable Player.
According to Rivals, Beasley is a "combo forward with both a powerful game and a finesse game...he can score from all three levels (block, midrange, perimeter)."
If Beasley did end up at Memphis, he would join the No. 3 overall recruit in 6-foot-4 point guard Derrick Rose as well as Jeff Robinson, a 6-foot-5 forward and the No. 35 overall recruit.
Rose and Beasley were roommates at the Nike Hoops Summit this week.
"I've been kidding around with him, telling him to come (to Memphis)," Rose told local reporters after the game.
