MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -The Memphis Grizzlies waived guard Eddie Jones on Tuesday after agreeing to a buyout of his contract.
Jones didn't play in Monday night's victory over Sacramento, and The Commercial Appeal reported Tuesday that he had agreed to a buyout. Jerry West, the team's president of basketball operations, announced in a statement that the guard had been waived.
"He was a consummate professional and we wish him well in his future basketball endeavors," West said. "On a personal note, I think he has a bright future in basketball after his playing days are over."
Jones was believed to be considering signing with several teams, including the Miami Heat, for whom he played before being traded to Memphis prior to the 2005-06 season. He will be eligible to sign with a new team on Thursday.
Jones played in 29 games this season and averaged 5.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 19.3 minutes. He had a season-high 19 points and hit the game-winner in a 132-130 overtime victory in Utah on Jan. 24.
But that was a big dip from last season when he averaged 11.8 points in 75 games, including 1.75 steals per game. Jones also averaged 10.3 points in the Grizzlies' four-game playoff loss to Dallas, which was second-highest on the team.
The Grizzlies replaced him on the roster by signing guard Will Conroy to a 10-day contract. Conroy, who had been playing in the NBA Development League, will be in uniform for Wednesday's game with Dallas.
