Benneteau, Querrey advance to second round in Memphis

MEMPHIS (AP) - Seventh seed Julien Benneteau moved into the second round of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and was joined by American teenager Sam Querrey on Wednesday.

Benneteau, who upset Andy Roddick in last year's ATP Tour event at The Racquet Club, defeated Korea's Hyung-Taik Lee, 7-5, 6-3. Benneteau was a qualifier last year when he eliminated Roddick in a quarterfinal match.

Querrey beat 6-10 Croatian Ivo Karlovic, 6-3, 6-2, behind 17 aces. Karlovic, who leads the Tour in aces, was unable to use his serve as a weapon. He was hampered by a left knee injury and was limited to five aces.

Also advancing to the second round was German Benjamin Becker. Becker, who reached the semifinals last week in San Jose, was a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 winner over Robert Kendrick.

Becker said he had to survive a strong start by Kendrick to advance.

"He just went for winners on every first ball," Becker said. "He hit a lot of winners without making any mistakes. I was waiting for him to make mistakes and he finally did in the second set."

In women's play, top seed Shahar Peer beat Milagros Sequera, 6-0, 6-0 and defending champion Sofia Arvidsson, who is not seeded, eliminated fifth seed Nicole Pratt, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
