A lawsuit has been filed against former Memphis basketball player Shawne Williams that claims he took almost $50,000 before his first season at The University of Memphis from Carl La Mondue, a Norfolk, Va., attorney who claims to be a sports agent.
The lawsuit was filed Nov. 8, but dismissed Nov. 15.
"This was the first time that we had heard of these allegations," said U of M Athletic Director R.C Johnson in a statement released Thursday afternoon. "The University is investigating the situation, and will take all necessary action if these allegations are substantiated. We have also been in contact with the NCAA, and are working cooperatively with that organization to investigate these allegations. Right now, however, The University must emphasize that these are only allegations."
After last night's game, head basketball coach John Calipari addressed the situation.
"I'd be surprised if there was anything to it," he said. "By being dismissed that shows a lot.
"Or kids understand and I think Shawne understood (the rules of dealing with agents)."
If found guilty of infractions The University could face sanctions that could include forfeiting wins from last year's team which ended their season as an Elite Eight team with a 33-4 record.
According to Tennessee Law any sports agent must register with the state before doing business within the state. The U of M requires agents also register with the Athletic Department, and then work with the head coach of the team before contacting student-athletes.
According to the Athletic Department, La Mondue never registered with the school.
