Teacher accused of slapping students banned from schools

NORTH BAY, Ont. - (CP) - A supply teacher accused of slapping elementary students in gym class has been banned from two North Bay elementary schools.

Gerald Brochu, 58, a teacher of 31 years, agreed Tuesday to a $500 peace bond for a year, to have no contact with six children and to stay away from the schools.

Provincial police arrested Brochu for alleged assaults on six Grade 3 and 4 students in June 2005.

The agreement means a trial scheduled for the end of the month won't go ahead, sparing about 25 witnesses - most of them children - from testifying.

This is the second supply teacher with the French-Catholic school board since the summer to use a $500 peace bond to deal with assault charges against students.

A similar deal was struck for a teacher accused of assaults last year against elementary students in Grades 5 and 6 at Sturgeon Falls schools.
