Review: Obie Trice's "Second Round's on Me"

Simply put "It's the business," says Rashad Lynch.

Obie Trice's latest release "Second Round's On Me," his first LP off of Shady Records, is not as much of a departure from his previous style as others might have you think. It does, however, show quite a bit of forward motion in regards to style and content.

Eminem executive produced the record and provided the majority of the beats.

Some may say the record's style is because of Eminem, who is critically acclaimed for being a versatile artist. Trice departs slightly from the verse-chorus-verse style format but continues to make the songs work without making them seem too long.

He utilizes traditional club-bumping beats, but on several songs delves into soul, reggae and even rock to deliver some amazing musical compositions. But unlike other artists, the beats are never more important than the content.

Listening to "Second Round's On Me" is like sitting in on a senior-level creative writing course. He puts words and phrasings together in an interesting and innovative way and keeps a constant cadence during his verse. He always enters on an up beat and ends on a downbeat, which makes remembering his lyrics very easy.

After you get this CD, be prepared to hear some cool rap music - great beat, great singers and great lyrics. Although it is new, it is very representative of what rap was in the early 90s. So, open it, pop it in and blast the volume.
