Under 21? You're not left in the dark

It's Friday night and the dorm is a buzz with everyone discussing evening plans. You can't wait to get out except there's one problem-you're under 21.

"It's like you can't wait to be 18 so that you can do what you want but then once you get to 18, you can't do anything," said Brandon Hunt, senior sports and leisure studies major.

Although Memphis is known for its lively clubs and bars that line Beale Street, there's so much more to do regardless of your age.

"It's not all about the clubs. School parties are held on the weekends and there are different fraternity events that take place throughout the year," said Antonio McCory, junior sports management major.

The Student Activities Council or SAC hosts weekly events for all students. Information on the events can be found in The Daily Helmsman, on the SAC Web site or on posters hanging around campus. There is no charge for SAC sponsored events.

Within walking distance from The University of Memphis are several inexpensive and students friendly hangouts.

"Buffalo Wild Wings is a spot for under age college students to hangout at," said Justin Jarrett, junior recording engineering major.

Located in the same plaza as Buffalo Wild Wings is Laser Quest Memphis. For a small admission fee, you can enjoy laser tag alone or with a group from 2 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday nights.

"Laser Quest is a good place to go on the weekend, everyone has a good time when they go," Hunt said.

RP Tracks, located next to Tiger BookStore on Walker Avenue, is a U of M tradition. "Tracks," as locals call it, has something for everybody. The menu features everything from burgers to vegetarian options. There's a jukebox, pool tables and an outside patio.

For those who crave the club scene, The Spot located at 600 Marshall Ave, Downtown, is a long time favorite of the under 21 set. Guest DJs mixed the latest Hip Hop, Pop and R&B in a fun and high-energy setting.

Also, by listening to the local radio stations, clubs will advertise parties that are open to those under 21.

"Just hanging out on Beale is cool. The Peabody has a movie theater and restaurants, there's a lot to do when you're under 21, it's not all about getting drunk," Hunt said.
