A guide to St. Patrick's Day in Memphis

Memphis may not be world famous for its St. Patrick's Day revelry, but we do hold our own. There are a number of activities and events scheduled for Friday and Saturday in the city.

The University area:

The Highland strip is offering a wide variety of pleasurable St. Patty's options. RP Tracks, RP Billiards, Blue Coast Burrito, Newby's and the Double Deuce are all participating in the 6th annual 93X "St. Patty's Day Poker Walk."

The Poker Walk is a pub crawl in disguise. You go to each bar and get a card in order to make the best poker hand. You can also trade with people, but there is a catch. There is a letter on the back of each card, and your hand has to spell "lucky" in order to win. The fun starts at 7 p.m. and cards have to be in by 10 p.m. Each winner will receive $93 for their trouble.

The South Park Bar will also be serving 99-cent beer and 99-cent barbecue sandwiches with Early Maxwell providing the soundtrack.

East Memphis:

The east part of town has some good offerings that may be worth your time. The Fox & Hound will be offering green beer and Jell-O shots which will go well with their corned beef and cabbage. They also boast a number of TVs, which will be tuned to basketball all weekend, and if that's not enough, there will also be prizes and giveaways.

T.J. Mulligan's on Poplar and Quince is bringing in two extra bars and will be serving green beer and corned beef and cabbage. There will also be party favors. Phill and Exault will be providing the entertainment for the paltry sum of $5.

The Dan McGuiness Pub will be going all out with kegs on their patio and a number of bands, including bagpipers and Kirk Smithhart. 98.1 will be broadcasting live.

The Brookhaven Pub won't be doing much for St. Patrick's Day, but they promise to have every TV tuned to the Tigers game.

Mid-town:

The hipster haven of Memphis has a very promising St. Patrick's Day schedule. The Irish Eyes of Memphis will be participating in the pub crawl, which will be starting at Murphy's and stumble its way to Overton Square and Huey's. Murphy's will be blessing the kegs and will have a number of musical acts all day long, including some bagpipers and Big Betsy, a band that plays once a year on St. Patrick's Day and is heavily influenced by Irish rock.

The Celtic Crossing will have traditional Irish dancers in the afternoon and bagpipers at 6 p.m. The Reel McCoy will be playing from 12-3 p.m., and Corn Fed Mafia is holding down the late-night spot.

Bosco's Squared is strictly against green beer, but they will be offering cask conditioned Stout and a beer garden on the patio for the sophisticated palate. They will also give you a free Bosco's pint glass with your first beer.

The Blue Monkey will also be joining in the celebration with green beer and giveaways for its patrons.

Downtown:

Silky O'Sullivan's will be hosting its annual blessing of the kegs and raising of the goat at 6 p.m. They will hoist a stuffed goat this year because their goats are feeling a bit under the weather, according to Jay Wells, manager.

Dan McGuiness in Peabody Place will have a number of drink specials and live entertainment. There will also be a St. Patrick's Day Parade on Beale Street at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Have a safe and fun St. Patrick's Day, and remember to wear green.
