Before Poochie unwrapped his new shoes and hat designed by his favorite rapper, he stopped off for a massage and hot oil treatment.
There are plenty of options this year for those shopping for favorite pets.
"Pet massages are really hot this year," said Peggy Marshall, an employee at Diamond in the Ruff Grooming.
Animal clothing is also popular. Many rappers have come up with their own lines of pet clothing, so animal lovers not only can find a sweater, they can choose little shoes or hats for their pets.
"Me and my rabbit will get matching sweaters this Christmas," said Tony Richardson, a senior sports management major.
If you plan to shop online for your pets you can find things like rhinestone bling-bling collars for your kitty, electric kitty mood detector and a Space-Age insect habitat.
But some people have more practical gift-giving ideas for their pets.
A nail clipping and good bath are some of the Christmas gifts people are requesting for their pets this Christmas.
"I plan to take my pet and get it groomed and dipped for Christmas," said Alena Thompson, a junior education major at The University of Memphis.
Pets Styles in Bartlett is a full service salon, which has therapeutic baths and hot oil treatments available for pets.
You can also purchase things like a designer animal tote and an ornament in the shape of your favorite animal.
Dog-lover baskets are another hot item this Christmas. They include treats your pets would love along with an assortment of other items.
Kong toys (http://www.kongcompany.com) has ideas for cats, dogs, ferrets and birds. Frisbee discs, chew toys and squeaky toys are good for dogs.
Making snacks for pets can also be a good idea for a holiday gift. For pets on a restricted or special diet, use the canned formula of the special diet. Pat the food into the bottom of a cookie sheet and bake at 200 degrees until it's dehydrated and firm. Allow to cool, break into pieces and you have a treat for your pet.
Another recipe for dogs uses hot dogs. Slice hot dogs into 1/4" or 1/8" thick pieces, place on a paper towel and sprinkle with garlic powder and place another paper towel on top of the pieces.
Cook in the microwave for 3-6 minutes, until the pieces have a jerky-like texture. Allow cooling and place in an airtight container. These treats can be stored in the freezer and make a great training treat.
But some don't shop for their pets at all.
"I really don't feel the need to buy all those unnecessary things for pets," said Jonathan Carter, an education major.
There are volunteer activities available with the Humane Society for those who don't want to spend money on pet gifts.
They can give a few hours of their time to help bring an animal in out of the cold, or they can volunteer when the society will be offering pet photos with Santa and volunteers are needed for sign up.
