Law school to host open house

The Cecil C. Humphrey School of Law will host an open house Monday, Nov. 14, for all students thinking about going to law school.

"It's a much different process applying for a professional school than it is for a graduate or undergraduate school," said Sueann McClellan, dean of admissions at the law school. "The more you know about the process, the easier it is."

The workshop will start at 4 p.m. and will cover a range of topics, like financial aid and the application process, to make the admissions process a little easier.

Students will have a chance to meet with law school administrators and faculty, as well as current law school students. Students will also be able to tour the school.

Other programs that will be held include a student moot court demonstration by The University of Memphis law team, which is a top national team, and a segment discussing the different careers available in the legal world.

"This is a great opportunity for us to show how successful our students are, as well as to show students how to get into the school and the curriculum that we will have," McClellan said.

Law school entrance is extremely competitive, McClellan said, and the U of M usually receives 1,200 applications and only accepts 150 students, just 23 percent of applicants.

"I'm really interested in the scholarship and admission information," said Frank Cardenas, a 21-year-old political science major. "It also seems like a great way to meet and socialize with current students and faculty who can tell me first hand how it is."

Students need to have taken the LSAT (Law School Admissions Test) at least 60 days before applying.

Undergraduate grade point averages (UGPAs) are also a significant factor in determining eligibility.

Current students will hold a discussion in a student panel, which will also be available for any prospective student's questions.

"I think that going to the open house will help me in my decision making process," said Matt Lott, a graduate student studying communication who is also considering law school. "The information will help me make an easier transition."

Any student interested needs to reserve a spot by Friday, Nov. 11. Students can request a spot by calling 678-5403 or via email at csmith@memphis.edu.
