FedEx Institute of Technology offers students way through college maze

While it is almost impossible to know every major available at The University of Memphis, the FedEx Institute of Technology is allowing colleges to educate students on the programs different colleges offer.

The FedEx Institute of Technology at The University of Memphis is hosting a number of events as a part of the Perspective Speakers Series. The first presentation will concentrate on the College of Education's exercise and sport science discipline.

The discussion will be tomorrow from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Methodist Presentation Theatre.

The presentation will give people an idea of what exercise and sport science students and faculty do in the laboratories. Not only will an introduction be given of the work itself, but presenters will demonstrate a sample of a study or line of work that is done in each particular lab.

"It will be kind of boring for someone who is not in the field," said Lawrence Weiss, U of M professor and director of human performance laboratories.

Weiss expects a variety of people to attend, including administration, faculty, students, off-campus guests and people from other universities. He said the presentation is not "in campus detail." It is about exercise and sport science as a whole.

Weiss said anyone wanting to know what issues will be covered can go to the FedEx building on campus and look at the posters in the lobby. There are 16 posters that give an idea of what will be covered during the presentations.

The Perspective Speakers Series will incorporate seven more presentations throughout the year.

"We wanted to give an opportunity to each college or school to utilize our space and come in and discuss whatever topic is relevant to their discipline," said Tiffany Brammer, U of M program manager at the FedEx Institute of Technology.

Brammer said it is up to the school to pick a topic they want to focus on because it is difficult to cover an entire college. The second presentation will be Nov. 30 and will highlight certain disciplines in the College of Business.

"The Perspective Speakers Series is a good idea as a whole because it will help freshmen learn about the different majors that are out there," said Monica Moody, U of M junior real-estate finance major.

"I hope that my college presents information about certain disciplines because it would be a good opportunity for me, as well as other students, to get a different perspective on our choice of study," Moody said.

All presentations are free and open to the public.
