Trick or Treat

Trick or treat! Usually these words are heard from the mouths of children, but many times they come from the mouths of college students. The holiday is no longer reserved for those not allowed to cross the street without a parent's permission.

Many students enjoy dressing up for the holiday, which has become a busy time for stores near The University of Memphis campus that sell costumes.

Cynthia Stevenson, an associate at Party City on Poplar Avenue, said she sees many students in her store this time of year.

"College students are here a lot for Halloween," she said. "There are at least 50 (students) in here right now."

Jennifer Campbell, a junior journalism major, plans to dress up as a mad scientist.

"I've always enjoyed dressing up," she said. "I love to pretend."

Dressing up is not the only thing Campbell plans to do, though. She plans to go to a party.

"I'm going to find a party," she said. "Any party that will take me."

Partying will be more popular than trick or treating, according to Stevenson.

"I don't know about trick or treating," she said, "but they really enjoy picking out a costume."

Campus parties are thrown each year by fraternities and sororities along with other campus groups who hope to raise money.

Not everyone on campus is excited about Halloween, however.

Ashley Sanchez, a sophomore nursing major, said she has no plans for Halloween, but not because she's too busy.

"I'm scared of Halloween," she said.

She said she does not know if anyone else shares her fear, but she does know that ghouls, goblins and ghosts are too scary for her.

"I'm just going to relax and study and not think about it," she said.
