Hunt dismissed

After two separate suspensions, it seems head coach John Calipari has had enough with senior Jeremy Hunt.

Hunt, a guard entering his final season with the Tigers, was released from The University of Memphis men's basketball team yesterday.

"Much to my regret, but in the best interest of our basketball team, I have permanently dismissed Jeremy Hunt," Calipari said. "I think The University and I have gone out of our way to give Jeremy every chance to be a part of this program, but we can not allow his actions to continue to be an ongoing distraction for this team."

Hunt was suspended indefinitely two weeks ago for violating team policy. According to The Commercial Appeal, the suspension stemmed from an altercation Hunt had Sept. 18 with a bouncer from Club 152 on Beale Street.

The first incident happened last January, when misdemeanor assault charges were filed against Hunt by his former girlfriend and Lady Tiger basketball player Tamika Rogers.

"Jeremy knew he had very little room for error after last year's incident," said Memphis Athletics Director R.C. Johnson in a press release. Johnson met with Hunt and Calipari on Tuesday afternoon. "I believe that he was given more than his fair share of opportunities to be a part of our basketball team."

Hunt will still remain on campus, but basketball will not be a part of his stay.

"Jeremy will remain in school and complete his degree work," Calipari stated in the release. "We all wish him the best in his future endeavors."

According to Lamar Chance, sports information director for men's basketball, neither players nor assistant coaches would talk about the issue. Neither Calipari or Johnson were available for comment.

Hunt averaged 9.5 points per game in his three years on the Tigers squad.
