Fall break leaves students wanting more

Fall break is just around the corner and University of Memphis students are spending their time off in a number of different ways.

Kim Crump, a nursing major, said she plans to study for her pharmacology and dosage exams after she visits her family in Braden, Tenn.

"I didn't realize that it was so close," Crump said. "I'm really excited."

Crump said she didn't think the break was long enough, but she is "thankful for anything."

Clifton Stone, a senior international business major, said he plans to meet up with friends in Knoxville before embarking on an outdoor adventure.

"We are going to go rock climbing in the Red River Gorge in Kentucky," Stone said. "I am definitely looking forward to it."

Another rock climber, Kellar McCloy, a pre-med student, said he had to stay home this fall break.

"Normally, I would go rock climbing because the weather is getting good," McCloy said. "But work is having a grand opening, so I can't get out of town."

Jen Wenker, a junior graphic design major, said she took her fall break early this year.

"Last weekend I went to Camp Linden with Campus Christian Crusade," Wenker said. "We met up with several other schools there. It was fun."

Keith Franks, an art history major who just turned 21, said he plans to start a new fall break tradition for himself.

"I have a friend coming in town,' Franks said. "We are going to go out and get drunk."

Vickie Miller, a senior criminal justice major, said she thought the break was ill-placed.

"It is the weirdest time period." Miller said. "It should be more like a spring break, but I doubt that it will ever be changed because it has been the same since I was a freshman."

Miller said she wouldn't get any time off though because she has to work.

Ramya Ramachandran, a junior interior design major, said she will be going to St. Louis to visit her sister.

"We are going to go shopping, to movies and go clubbing," Ramachandran said. "I need the break. I've got projects piling up."

Russell Hayes, a freshman political science major, said he is looking forward to spending time with his friends but would enjoy a little more free time.

"I'm just going to sit around," Hayes said. "But break should be at least a week."

Jaime Travis, a sophomore art major, said she is going to see her boyfriend at the University of Auburn.

"I'm going to go out on the town, at least what town there is to go out in. It's a small place," Travis said.

"I think that U of M should combine fall break and Thanksgiving break though, so we could get a few more days off in a row."
