University of Memphis students will be getting down and dirty this weekend all in the name of charity.
The ladies of Delta Gamma sorority are hosting Anchor Splash Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Hyper in the Larry Finch Center.
Anchor Splash, the sorority's annual philanthropy event, will showcase the aquatic talents of the men in each of the campus's fraternities, with each organization performing its own synchronized swimming.
A variety of swimming events, like races and diving competitions, will also take place. The organization that raises the most money will be crowned The Anchor Splash champion.
"Everyone will be there, so it'll be a lot of fun," said Amy Sloan, a junior physical education major and Delta Gamma member.
Admission is $5 at the door, and all proceeds go to Delta Gamma's charities, The Delta Gamma Foundation and Service for Sight, an organization geared toward servicing blind and visually impaired children.
Anchor Splash has made such a splash in the last few years that the ladies and the event here on campus has been featured in their organization's national video.
"They picked our school to feature Anchor Splash," said Whitney Howerton, a sophomore biology major and Delta Gamma sister. "That's pretty cool."
In hopes of gaining extra money for the charities, the ladies held the "Most Beautiful Eyes" contest Thursday in the Tiger Den.
A representative from each fraternity and sorority had a picture taken of just his or her eyes. The remaining members chose the picture that represents the member they think is from their organization by donating money.
According to Sloan, Anchor Splash raises more money than any other philanthropic event on campus.
Also happening this weekend is Mudball, which is being held Saturday at 11 a.m. at "Tiger Beach" outside Richardson Towers.
Mudball, an annual volleyball game played in six inches of mud, is sponsored by the Student Ambassador Board.
Teams of six players compete to receive a prize. All proceeds from this event will benefit the J. Wayne Johnson Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship will be awarded to outstanding graduating seniors exhibiting academic and leadership excellence, and will be presented by the SAB. Applications for the scholarship will be available in the spring.
"Mudball was so fun last year," said Jessica Bearden, a senior journalism major. "We got crazy muddy."
