Not ready for the future? They can help

Preparing to apply to graduate school can be a tedious task, but attending the Graduate and Professional School Fair can make the process easier.

The fair will be Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in The University Center Ballroom.

"The graduate school fair is a good opportunity for students who want to attend grad school to research about grad school programs," said Clay Woemmel, The U of M assistant director of career services.

The University of Memphis, along with approximately 70 other schools, will be available to answer any questions students may have.

Several other schools attending the fair are Alabama A&M University, Clemson University, Delta State University and Miami University.

The representatives at the graduate fair will assist students about most majors - anywhere from nursing, psychology, law or art.

Students should be dressed professionally and ready to ask questions to any of the admissions officers available at the graduate fair.

Some questions students are expected to ask will relate to admission requirements, application deadlines, interview processes, financial aid and prerequisite requirements, said Sarabeth Beekman, The U of M career and employment internship coordinator.

Delta State University offers a variety of programs.

"We have a brand new scholarship called the B.F. Smith scholarship that offers $10,000 a year and waives tuition (for grad school)," said Tyrone Jackson, DSU assistant director of graduate and continuing studies.

Therefore, if money is an issue holding any students back from attending graduate school, there may be some alternatives.

Taylor Sargent, a U of M student, is thinking about going to graduate school because he thinks it gives most people an upper hand in the business world because they have that "extra bit" of education.

Sargent said he would attend the graduate school fair if he were certain he was ready to apply.

Beeker said some students do not have to attend graduate school based on what they studied to receive their undergraduate degree.

For some specialized graduate programs, such as medical school, it is important for the student to take major-related courses.
