Memphis students raise support for storm victims

In an effort to raise money and items for Hurricane Katrina victims, the Student Nursing Association is asking University of Memphis students to reach further into their pockets.

"We [the nursing school] are almost at 100 percent, and we want every department to do the same," said Rachel Kannady, captain of the interim executive board of the SNA. "We are challenging The U of M to match it."

SNA is trying to set up a temporary account through The U of M Bursar's office, where they can place money collected from students. They want every student to donate at least one dollar.

Kannady estimated that from the bachelor's program to doctoral students, the Loewenberg School of Nursing has between 600 to 700 students.

Carrie McIvor, SNA executive board member and third semester nursing student, said she hopes The U of M meets the nursing school's challenge for the sake of the Katrina evacuees.

"I'm hoping that The University will rally around all the evacuees in the city, so that we can show them how much we care," McIvor said.

The SNA campus-wide money drive will most likely start at the end of this week and will run at least until the end of September, Kannady said.

Donations can be taken to the School of Nursing in Newport Hall until the Bursar's account is complete.

"We want everybody to have plenty of time, paydays you know," Kannady said.

However, money is not the only contribution the SNA is looking for. They also want students and faculty to donate personal hygiene products and toiletries.

The nursing program teaches students that the first step to helping patients is to provide them with necessities, Kannady said. This includes safety and cleanliness.

"We can't do anything here about their safety, but we can help with cleanliness," she said.

The program is accepting all donations, but has specifically requested soap, shampoo, conditioner, combs and razors.

"Think about how much better you feel when you're clean and well-shaved," Kannady said.

Other items requested include baby care products like diapers, wipes and diaper rash cream.

"People can even bring in towels if they want, we won't turn anything away," she said.

Students can drop off donation items in the lobby of several buildings, including the Tiger Den, the University Center and Newport Hall. The toiletry drive will also last until the end of September.

Amy Abernathy, SNA executive board member and first year nursing student, said there has been a large response from people, but there is never enough.

"I think, we, everybody, feels an overwhelming sense to do something as a campus and as a community," Abernathy said. "With all of the drives going on, everyone forgets the little things, like getting up and wanting to brush your teeth."
