May 2006: No one will see the UC

In May 2006, The University of Memphis will begin the two -year journey of rebuilding The University Center. But, before the old UC can be destroyed over 50 offices currently housed within the building must be relocated into other buildings on campus.

"We are still in the throes of planning. Originally, we were supposed to move in December," said Jay Andersen, director of the UC since its opening in 1968.

He said the reason why they are moving next May instead of December is a matter of space and scheduling.

"The big thing is the fact we don't have the space (to place offices)," Andersen said.

Starting next spring, the UC offices and events will be sprinkled predominantly in four locations -- Wilder Tower, the Panhellenic Building (whose offices will be moving next may also), the Rose Theatre and Holiday Inn for events. Mitchell Auditorium is another choice for the events schedule but academic activities have priority, Andersen said.

With new additions, such as an auditorium that can sit 350 people, 24-hour food service and computer labs, as well as other additions, the new UC will not be inexpensive.

The projected cost of the new UC is $47 million and will be completely funded by student fees -- $36 that will be included in each student's tuition.

"If the benefits of it will greater and not hurt the student financially, I think it is a good idea," said Teresa Poindexter, senior English major.

Stacey Shepard thinks the rebuilding of the UC is the right for thing for The University to do.

"I think it is a good idea even though I won't be here to enjoy it," she said.

Poindexter thinks the idea of a computer lab in the UC is smart.

"Having a lab in here sounds great," she said.

During this transitional period, every operation within the building except the UC marketplace will still operate.

"The post office will be moved to Richardson Towers," Andersen said. For now, the remainder of the offices have yet to be placed in a temporary home by The University's space planning and utilization office.

The new UC will have three floors, getting rid of the basement entirely.

"The building will move outward," Andersen said.

The contractors that surveyed the UC thought it would even be a good idea to have retail space available.

"Another Starbucks would be great. I need coffee to stay awake during the finals, " Shepard said.

Poindexter thinks there should be a store for sorority and fraternity apparel.

"Someplace that sells Greek paraphernalia. A Greek store would be good," she said.
