With summer and fall registrations coming up students are beginning to browse Tigerweb again to look at the selection of classes.
Graduate students and seniors looking to graduate in May have also been checking their grades online as the end of the semester approaches. To the people who have not visited Tigerweb lately, the site has changed its look.
The U of M recently purchased SungardSCT's latest release, which explains the change in the Web site's appearance.
SungardSCT, a United Kingdom-based company, is The University's software vendor and every time it makes a state update The University has to keep up with it, according to associate registrar Donna Van Canneyt.
"We have to keep up to date or else we'll fall behind," Van Canneyt said.
SungardSCT issues the release, which goes to the state, where it is modified and sent out to the 19 schools that use the software, Van Canneyt said.
Van Canneyt said the change to Tigerweb was supposed to try to match the Student Information System banner.
"It's just a new look," Van Canneyt said.
But the usage of the new-look Tigerweb has left some students scratching their heads.
Senior music major Rose Vidro said she had trouble using Tigerweb the last time she accessed it.
"I'm just used to the original," Vidro said.
Although Tigerweb looks neater, using it was not easy, said Crystal Wilson, a graduate student in school counseling.
Wilson said the changes made it seem like Tigerweb added a step.
"It takes a little time," Wilson said. "I know change has to occur, but things could stay the same a little longer."
Sophomore graphic design major Edwin Olivera, said the Apple computers he uses in the graphic design lab use Safari as an Internet browser.
Olivera said from his experience he was not able to access the grades and financial aid options on the new Tigerweb due to Safari, but did not experience the same problem under Safari with the previous version of Tigerweb.
The problem, though, has only been with Safari Olivera said.Although seemingly difficult to adjust to, some students said the new Tigerweb was much neater and more convenient to use.
"Any kind of changes bother people," Olivera said. "People just have to get used to it."
Vidro said the new Tigerweb made it easier to look up her grades since it listed all of her past semesters.
"It's more convenient and sets up a lot better," said freshman nursing major Stephanie Patrick. "At the bottom they have a help center link which they didn't have last time."
Freshman international business major C.J. Tyus said the new Tigerweb is harder to use, but liked the layout a whole lot more.
"It doesn't look cheap anymore and it's pretty different," Tyus said.
