03/30: Police Beat

Friday, March 11

3:45 a.m.

An officer noticed a car leaning against a tree on Zach Curlin. When the officer approached the car she noticed the driver was trying to start the car, which had extensive front-end damage. The police report said the accident happened after the driver, Dustin Golightly, was unable to maneuver a curve that would have taken him northbound on Zach Curlin from Walker Avenue. When he lost control of the car, he hit a utility pole, which MLGW had to replace. The officer called Metro DUI after Golightly needed help getting out of the car, walking and standing. Metro DUI tried to perform several field sobriety tests, but had to quit for Golightly's safety. He was then taken to 201 Poplar for refusing a blood alcohol test, reckless driving, failure to maintain his vehicle and DUI.

Tuesday, March 15

11:35 p.m.

Fred Nesbit Jr. called police after he got into a fight at the Fogelman College of Business. He told police he and the fiancée of an employee had exchanged hits. Nesbit refused any medical attention that was offered to him.

Friday, March 18

10:28 p.m.

Police responded to a simple assault call in South Hall. Sabrina Lupo told police that she and her boyfriend, Jason Milburn, had gotten into a physical altercation.

Monday, March 21

2:30 a.m.

Police responded to a vandalism call made by Reginald Hardeman. Hardeman told police he noticed someone had used spray paint on the walls while he was locking up.

Monday, March 21

9:34 a.m.

Deborah Scott called police after finding her purse missing from her desk drawer in the Engineering Tech Building. She told police she had been in and out of her office, and left the door open. Scott's estimated loss is $242.

Monday, March 21

12:39 p.m.

Police responded to a call made by Candace Halvorson who said someone had tried to break into her car while she was out of town with the soccer team. She had parked her car in the Normal lot on Saturday, March 20 while traveling on the team's bus, and returned the following day. She said nothing had been taken from the car. The reporting officer inspected the car and believed someone had tried to remove the door handle and latch from the passenger door. Halvorson estimated the damage to be $1,500.

Tuesday, March 22

7:10 p.m.

Police received a theft call from Valery Gaiko. Gaiko told police that someone had broken the combination lock that was securing his locker in the men's locker room at the Hyper. He told police his wallet and notebook were stolen. The estimated loss was $65.

Wednesday, March 23

3:40 p.m.

Mahawa Coulibaly reported to police that her car had been broken into while it was parked in lot #17 at the intersection of Southern Avenue and Patterson Avenue. The car's rear passenger window was shattered. A chemistry book and psychology book, collectively worth $355, were taken from the car.

Friday, March 25

2:00 a.m.

Two officers noticed a group of people standing around in the Information Center lot and approached them. The two officers could smell the strong odor of burning marijuana. Tristan Dorsey, who was a part of the group, walked away from the area holding the joint the group had been smoking in his hand. One of the officers made contact with him. Dorsey apologized to the officer and said he knew he wasn't supposed to smoke marijuana on campus, but he had just gotten off work and wanted to relax. The officers confiscated the joint and turned the incident over to Judicial and Ethical Programming along with Residence Life.
