03/02: Police Beat

Thursday, February 17

10:30 p.m.

Alicia Golston reported to police that her cell phone was stolen while she was attending a black history event in The University Center. She said she left the phone in her seat when she went to the front to make the closing announcements. When she returned at the end of the program her cell phone was gone. After trying several times to locate the phone by calling it, she contacted the phone's provider to suspend her service. The phone was worth approximately $50.

Friday February 18

12:51 p.m.

Police responded to a theft call made by Kevin Smith. Smith reported that his full money clip had been taken from the student activities center. Smith told police he left his keys and the clip by the mirrors in the weight room of the Hyper. When he finished and returned to the cubby a half an hour later, his keys were there, but the clip and money were gone. The stolen property was worth about $54.

Friday, February 18

4:00 p.m.

Mary Cunningham reported to police that her $2,000 laptop had been stolen. A police report said she had left the computer in the basement of the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. She said she left the area at 2:30 p.m., and came back 30 minutes later to find the laptop missing.

Monday, February 21

12:30 p.m.

Stephanie Williams called police to report that her sister's car had been broken into while it was sitting on Bufford Ellington North in The University of Memphis married student housing complex. She told police that her sister's radio had been stolen out of the vehicle. There was also a black vinyl purse missing. There was no damage to the car from the break-in of the vehicle or the removal of the stereo. The estimated loss was $60.

Monday, February 21

1:44 p.m.

Police responded to a vandalism call made by Grant Robbins, an employee of The University of Memphis' Athletic Department. Robbins told police he had seen a University-owned van parked at the 621 Normal St. lot. When he left the area at approximately 10:30 a.m., he saw nothing wrong with the 1999 white GMC Savanna 3500. When Robbins returned, he noticed the large driver's side window had been busted out. After inspecting the van, Robbins noticed nothing missing. The approximate damage will cost $1000.

Wednesday, February 23

8:40 a.m.

Karen Hayes told police that her office in Wilder Tower had been burglarized. She reported that while she was away from her office, Room 411, she had locked the door. When she returned she noticed her coat had been stolen. The coat was worth about $150.

Thursday, February 24

3:42 p.m.

Police received a call from Paige Womack, who stated that her wallet had been stolen from her backpack. The incident occurred in the McWherter Library when she left the backpack to go the first floor. She told police the only person in the area of the theft was a bald, heavy-set black male who was wearing a dark green or blue jacket and jeans. She said the man, who appeared to be in his late 20s or early 30s, left the scene when she returned to the area where she left the backpack. The estimated loss was $88.
