Local area businesses hope to help, draw in students

Your University ID is becoming more than a copy card. From ballets to free cover charges at Memphis nightclubs, your ID could be saving you money. The University of Memphis offers several discounted and free tickets to enrolled students through the student information desk in The University Center.

"Playhouse On The Square and Circuit Playhouse events have become very popular," said Kelly Pointer, international studies junior and student information employee.

"I plan on getting discounted tickets to 'The Little Shop of Horrors,'" said sophomore accounting major Shelton Russell.

Tickets to the popular Broadway musical are available for $10 dollars in the bursar's office.

If you're not into theater, you can always check out the Civil Rights Museum or the Brooks Museum, all for no charge.

"I never knew you could get anything free," said Jeff Nix, freshman undecided major.

However well known the events are to students, The University has worked to expand the selection of featured events.

"Last semester we added the Wonder Series at the Pink Palace," said Pointer.

Take your ID off campus and you can find a host of other discounts just for students.

A short drive to Olive Branch's Wedgewood Golf Course will afford you a discounted weekly price of $25 with cart with your student ID.

"We know college students don't have much money," said course manager Joey Brown.

"I would really like to see more student cliental during the week."Businesses all over the city competing for the college student market have stepped up discounts in order to bring in students.

Pier 1 Imports has offered a 15 percent discount to ID carrying students between the months of August and September for several years and gives discounts to dorm-decorating students.

"We have continued to see success from the program every year," said Pier 1 manager Elizabeth Pitts.

You can see a movie for $5 at Muvico Theaters in Peabody Place, get 10 percent off a haircut at Fantastic Sam's or even get 15 percent off an Amtrak trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras.

"I really don't know how students are supposed to know about discounts they can use with their ID," said Jim McKnight, junior engineering major.
