Sometimes the 124 credit hours seniors earn are not enough to see them leave The University with a diploma in their hand.
For many, the opportunity to wear the cap and gown can be postponed due to paper work, such as passing the senior exam.
To graduate in August seniors have to file for graduation by April 6, according to College of Communication and Fine Arts graduation analyst Angie Hollis.
For some semesters in the College of Arts and Sciences, an exit exam is included with the required senior exam, according to graduation analyst Mary Jones.
To take the exam, seniors need to call the testing center, Hollis said.
"If they have not taken the senior test, then they cannot be placed on the graduation list," Jones said.
Also, seniors have to see their graduation analyst, faculty advisor and the department chair.
"The purpose is to make everybody aware what they have left in order to graduate," Hollis said.
Prior to graduation they would have to visit the commencement Web site to obtain their cap and gown.
Although most of the colleges have similar procedures for graduating their seniors, class requirements might be different.
The College of Communication and Fine Arts requires the students to complete their general education, and major requirements in order to graduate.
Bachelor of fine arts and music majors need to complete their general education along with 85 hours of their chosen concentration. The Fogelman College of Business and Economics has the same procedures as the College of Communication and Fine Arts except they must register for their senior exam Jones said.
"Our goal is to make every department go through the same thing," Jones said.
The Loewenberg School of Nursing will most likely graduate six or seven students in this August's graduation, according to graduation analyst Ella Daniels.
Daniels said the reason is because there are usually two kinds of students.
"There are licensed and non-licensed students," Daniels said. "The licensed students usually graduate by summer."
The basic students or non-registered nurses graduate in the fall, Daniels said.
"If they have all the general education and nursing requirements, then they just get a Bachelor of Science and Nursing degree," Daniels said.
Nursing majors have to schedule an exam in order to become registered nurses.
Nursing majors, though, do not have to take a senior exam or an exit exam in order to graduate.
Altough graduation is in August, minor deadlines can keep certain seniors from earning their degree.
"It looks better on your resumé, then just saying you went to some college, " said senior management information systems major Fahron Jones. "I'm glad it's over."
