Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,
In my e-mail of January 20, I informed you of the processes theUniversity presently follows when a student is accused of a crime. Atthe beginning of the semester, I asked that three major reviews takeplace in regards to the University's responsibilities.
First, the Office of Legal Counsel is examining the policies andprocedures for reviewing cases of any student accused of a crime.Additional steps are required when the student is receiving an athleticsscholarship. This review is being led by Sheri Lipman, University LegalCounsel, and by Law Professor Nick White, Faculty Athletics CommitteeChairman.
Second, I asked Athletic Director R.C. Johnson to make recommendationsregarding the Athletics Department. He has decided to review thedisciplinary actions of coaches in matters related to the behavior ofathletes on and off the court or field and the athletes' academicperformance and adherence to our requirements. These reviews are beingled by Mr. Johnson and Provost Ralph Faudree, who is responsible forUniversity Academic Affairs.
Third, the Faculty Athletics Committee has been asked to review theguidance, counseling and support of student athletes. This initiativeis being lead by the chairman of the committee, Professor Nick White andVice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Rosie Bingham.
While I did not enumerate these three actions in the January 20 e-mailto you, I noted that review of the policies and procedures are underwayand the results will be announced when the reviews are completed. I amproviding this information so that you as the University community willknow the specific reviews that are underway. As a University, we wantto make sure we are doing what is right, following legal requirements, and most importantly, that we are meeting our obligations to thosestudents who choose to attend the University of Memphis.
Thank you for your continued support and concern for the University.
