12/07: Police Beat

Wednesday, November 24

9:00 a.m.

A U of M student came to Police Services, 505 Zach Curlin, to report that her ex-boyfriend, who is not a U of M student, was stalking her. University Police are continuing to investigate this case.

Friday, November 26

7:37 p.m.

University Police responded to an attempted theft from vehicle call on the South Campus. The responding officer noticed two Caucasian males near a University vehicle. When the officer yelled at the men, they ran from the area. After checking the vehicle, the officer found that it was unlocked, but nothing appeared to be missing. Additional officers arrived at the scene and searched the area but were unable to locate the suspects.

Saturday, November 27

7:25 p.m.

University Police answered a disturbance call in the Carpenter Complex. Officers found a boyfriend and girlfriend who had gotten into a physical altercation. Officers determined that the female had been the primary aggressor. They arrested her for simple assault/domestic violence and transported her to jail.

Sunday, November 28

12:00 a.m.

Police answered a vandalism call at the Holiday Inn, 3700 Central. A witness told officers that she observed a male approach a truck and knock the headlights out. He then returned to his vehicle and left the area. Officers located the owner of the damaged truck, and he had no idea who the suspect was or why he would damage the truck. The victim was an employee of the hotel. The suspect also punctured both driver's side tires of the vehicle. Total loss is estimated at $230.

Monday, November 29

1:35 a.m.

Police arrived at Smith Residence Hall, 416 Patterson, in response to an assault complaint. A student reported that she and her roommate were threatened by her roommate's ex-boyfriend. The case is under continued investigation.

Monday, November 29

8:57 a.m.

University Police answered a theft/forgery call in Smith Residence Hall, 416 Patterson. A student said that she discovered that a check had been taken from her room and cashed. She obtained a copy of the check that was made out to her roommate. The student told officers that the signature on the check was not her own.

Monday, November 29

4:24 p.m.

Officers answered a vandalism call in the Central Lot. A student reported that between 9 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. on Nov. 25, someone smashed the front passenger window on his 1985 Volvo. Nothing appeared to be missing from the vehicle. Total damages were not available.

Monday, November 29

10:30 p.m.

University Police responded to a theft call in Richardson Towers, 3603 Central. A student told officers that someone took two credit/debit cards from his wallet in an unsecured locker in the HPER between 6:45 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. this date. He discovered that they were gone when his bank called about unauthorized purchases made between 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. The case is under continued investigation.

Wednesday, December 1

6:21 a.m.

A staff member in Dunn Hall, 3725 Norriswood, called police to report that an office door was open when he arrived at the building. The door should have been closed and locked, he reported. The officer checked inside the office, but found no one inside. Two other staff members reported that at approximately 4 a.m. the alarm was off and it appeared that someone was inside the office. They gave officers a description of the subject inside the office. A faculty member told officers that $80 in property was missing from the office and some items had been rearranged. He reported that he left the office at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 30 and locked the door and set the alarm.

Wednesday, December 1

2:20 p.m.

Police observed a 1998 Dodge Durango jump the curb and drive around the parking gate at Richardson Towers, 3603 Central. The officer also saw that the vehicle did not have a license plate. After stopping the vehicle, the officer found that the driver had a suspended license and outstanding warrants. He was charged with driving on a suspended license and violation of vehicle registration. Officers transported the driver to jail.

Wednesday, December 1

A staff member filed a credit card fraud complaint at Police Services, 505 Zach Curlin. She told police that a guest at the Holiday Inn had reported that his credit card had been used without his knowledge. The guest had called the hotel from out of state. He received a $272.17 invoice for goods purchased over the Internet. The invoice showed that the items had been shipped to a Memphis address. The address was found to be that of a hotel employee.
