11/19: Police Beat

Tuesday, November 9

5:30 p.m.

University Police answered a suspicious person call in Dunn Hall, 3725 Norriswood. The responding officer reported that she was checking on suspicious male who smelled of an intoxicant. The officer observed a bulge in the man's pocket and when searching him, found a small ax. Police arrested the man and charged him with carrying a weapon on school property. He was also charged with public intoxication. Police transported the man to the Criminal Justice Center, 201 Poplar.

Wednesday, November 10

2:50 a.m.

Two University Police officers responded to a vandalism call at the Sigma Chi Fraternity house, 3582 Mynders. Jonathon D. Payne told officers that Joseph C. Lane contacted him after hearing a loud crash coming from the Sigma Chi house. Lane was on the east side of the Kappa Alpha Order house when he heard a window shatter. Payne, after being notified about the broken window, called University Police. Damage to the fraternity house included a broken double pane security window left of the front door. A carriage lamp was also broken and two large planters had been overturned. Total damages are estimated at $400.

Thursday, November 11

3:11 a.m.

Police answered a disturbance call in Richardson Towers, 3603 Central. A staff member reported that two men walked out of the building. Ten minutes later, one student returned with a black eye. When officers arrived they discovered that the injured student had been fighting over lost property. The other party involved was not a student but had been living with the student. The non-student was cited for trespassing, and the student was advised on procedures for obtaining a warrant.

Thursday, November 11

10:03 a.m.

A U of M student filed a theft report at Police Services, 505 Zach Curlin. He told officers that at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 5, he was having breakfast with friends in the University Center. They walked away from the dining area, and the student accidentally left his backpack. When he returned, his bag was missing. Total loss is estimated at $180.

Thursday, November 11

12:27 p.m.

Police responded to a theft report filed at Police Services. A student reported that she left her purse unattended on the north side of the fieldhouse, 495 Zach Curlin, in an open field while she attended band practice from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 10. Later in the evening, the student realized that her wallet was missing from her purse. She told police that several credit cards were stolen. One of the cards had already been used for gas purchases at several locations. Total loss for the wallet was estimated at $27. The value of the purchases was unknown.

Thursday, November 11

7:08 p.m.

Police answered a theft call in Jones Hall, 3706 Alumni. A student told officers that she left her purse on a table near the south end of the cafeteria. She left the area without her purse. When she returned, it was missing. Total loss is estimated at $133.

Friday, November 12

10:16 a.m.

A student called University Police to report vandalism to his vehicle at Southern and Goodman. He told officers that someone broke out his right front window between 8:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. After checking the contents of his vehicle, he did not think that anything was missing. Total damages are estimated at $200.

Saturday, November 13

7:55 a.m.

Police answered a burglary call in Richardson Towers, 3603 Central. A student reported that he awoke at approximately 12:35 a.m. and discovered that his wallet was missing from a table near his bed. The door to the room had been left unlocked during this time. The wallet was found in the stairwell minus the cash. Total loss is $20.

Saturday, November 13

9:27 p.m.

Police responded to a disturbance call in Smith Hall, 416 Patterson. Officers located a student, who told them that she had been drinking off campus. The student was arrested for public intoxication and transported to a detoxification center.

Monday, November 15

12:50 a.m.

Police responded to a theft from vehicle call in lot #23 at Patterson and Midland. A student told officers that she parked her vehicle at 11 p.m. and returned at 12:50 a.m. to find the driver's side window broken out. A CD player was missing from the vehicle's dashboard. No other items appeared to be missing. Total loss is estimated at $350.

Monday, November 15

2:13 p.m.

A student called University Police to report a theft from her vehicle in lot #23 at Patterson and Midland. She told police that on Nov. 4 at 8:30 p.m. she parked her vehicle in the lot. When she returned on Nov. 15 at 2:10 p.m., she saw that the passenger's front window was broken out and her CD player was missing. There were pry marks on the window frame and the stereo had been pried from the dashboard. Total loss is estimated at $600.

Monday, November 15

5:25 p.m.

Police responded to a domestic disturbance/assault call on the South Campus. A resident reported that she had an altercation with her husband, who had since left the area. Officers located the husband down the street, and he denied any altercation with his spouse. Neither party had visible injuries or marks. The case was referred to the Memphis Domestic Violence bureau.
