11/05: Police Beat

Saturday, October 231:48 p.m.University Police answered a burglary call at the Carpenter Complex. A student told police that he left his apartment at 9:30 a.m. this date. When he returned at 1:30 p.m., he saw that the screen on his bedroom window had been taken off and the window was raised. He reported to officers that money was missing from the pocket of his jeans on the bed. Total loss is estimated at $404.

Sunday, October 249:37 p.m.Police responded to a disturbance in the parking lot at Richardson Towers West. Witnesses told officers that a male and female were fighting. When bystanders attempted to diffuse the situation, the male brandished a handgun. Police identified both people as non-students.

Monday, October 2512:00 p.m.A student filed a theft report at Police Services, 505 Zach Curlin. He told officers that between 2:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on October 24, his cell phone was stolen from a rack in the Recreational Center. Total loss is estimated at $250.

Tuesday, October 261:36 p.m.A U of M student filed a simple assault report at Police Services. He told officers that a former friend and U of M student assaulted him between 12:50 p.m. and 1 p.m. this date. They were arguing over personal property at the time of the assault. The student also advised that he was threatened in a voice message.

Tuesday, October 263:44 p.m.University Police answered a theft from vehicle call in the Deloach Garage. A student told officers that she parked her car on the fourth floor of the parking garage, near the southeast elevator at approximately 12:45 p.m. When she returned to the car at 3:40 p.m. and found that someone had stolen two books from the front passenger seat of her vehicle. Entry was gained by breaking the left rear window of the car. Total loss is estimated $240.

Tuesday, October 267:15 p.m.Police answered a simple assault at Mynders Hall, 445 State Street. Two students advised that they had been harassed and assaulted in front of Smith Hall, 416 Patterson. One of the students was physically assaulted, but had no injuries. Student described on of the attackers as a 6 foot black male, 25-29 years old with dreadlocks and bad teeth. He got out of a small black Nissan truck and asked the female students if they were interested in buying DVDs. He got physical with one of the students after they began arguing. The second suspect stayed in the car. Officers searched the area but could not locate the suspects or the truck.

Wednesday, October 27A female student reported that she was attacked near the northwest section of the Central parking lot as she was getting into her car. A larger black male, approximately 6'2" to 6'4", wearing a ski mask, gray pants, a dark turtleneck and gloves asked the victim for directions and then threw her to the ground. He kicked the student several times. The victim told officers that she was slammed into her car and received several cuts from a bladed instrument. The student was able to break away from the attacker and get into her car. The students received some injuries and sought medical attention.

Friday, October 2910:23 a.m.Police answered a domestic disturbance call in the Carpenter Complex. Officers spoke with two students, a boyfriend and girlfriend, who were involved in the altercation. Officers did not observe injuries to either student. Both parties told officers that they did not want to press charges. Officers referred the case to the dean of students and the domestic violence bureau downtown.

Friday, October 293:10 p.m.Police answered a theft call from the Deloach parking garage. A staff member told officers that she parked her vehicle at 8:30 a.m. on October 27. When she returned at 4:30 p.m. that date, she noticed that her license plate was missing.

Friday, October 295:40 p.m.Officers answered a theft call at the University Center. A student told police that she left her purse in a room while attending a show in the University Center on October 28. Her wallet was stolen between 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. She told police that her credit card was used at a gas station. There is no estimate of total loss.

Saturday, October 3011:00 p.m.Police answered a fire alarm in Rawls Hall, 415 State. While on the scene, officers found a male hiding in a closet. He had apparently gained entry to the dorm and was waiting for his girlfriend to return to her room. Police advised the male that he was trespassing and they escorted him off campus.

Monday, November 17:20 a.m.A female student reported an attempted robbery to Police Services. She told police that as she was getting out of her car in the northern Zach Curlin parking lot, a man approached her and demanded that she give him her wallet. The robber was armed with a small knife, but the victim was not injured. She was able to get away from the man who she described as a 6'2" to 6'4" white male wearing a ski mask, black long-sleeve shirt and black pants. There were some similarities to an earlier incident in the Central lot, but police could not decide if the two incidents were related.

Monday, November 19:05 a.m.Police responded to a purse snatching in the South lot, 3699 Southern. A student reported that she was walking through the lot when a male grabbed her purse and ran south. She was not injured and called police from Patterson Hall. Officers searched the area but could not locate the suspect who was described as a black male 5'9" to 5'11", wearing a gray shirt and blue warm up pants. Total loss is estimated at $295.

Monday, November 14:45 p.m.Police answered a vandalism call in the Richardson Towers lot. A student reported that between 11 p.m. October 31 and 12 p.m. this date, someone keyed all four sides of his car. There is no estimate of total damages.

Monday, November 1 6:58 p.m.University Police answered a theft from vehicle call in the Richardson Towers lot. The student told officers that he parked his vehicle at 11:30 p.m. on October 31 and returned at 5:45 p.m. on November 1 to find that the rear sliding window on his truck had been broken. Several items, including his stereo, were missing. Total loss is estimated at $1,900.

Monday, November 17:57 p.m.Police answered a theft from vehicle call at a residence area on the South campus. A resident reported that someone broke the driver window on her vehicle between 5:15 p.m. and 7:27 p.m. this date. Her purse was stolen from the car. Total loss is estimated at $266.
