Tulane Green Wave (1-3, 0-2) @ Memphis Tigers (4-1, 1-1)
Put the (running) lane in Tulane
Memphis should take advantage of Tulane's mediocre run defense early.
The Green Wave ranks 84th in rushing defense, allowing an average of 184.0 yards per game, including a 302 yards rushing against Southern Miss.
In addition to those current struggles, DeAngelo Williams has a history of success against Tulane. Last season he rushed for a then career high 195 yards. Mix in his current momentum from a school record 262 yards rushing against Houston two weeks ago, and it could be an ugly recipe for Tulane's front seven. If the Tigers come out of the gate running, it should open play-action passing lanes for Danny Wimprine and his merry band of receivers. Tulane has been stingy against the pass. Running first, throwing later could be a formula for success.
Avoid the rushing 'Wave
Quarterback protection is a key. Tulane averages 4 sacks per game and has had success getting after the passer.
So far this season, five TU defenders have caught the quarterback at least twice. Memphis has done a nice job of protection this season, and Wimprine gets the ball out quick to his regiment of receivers.
That needs to continue. Wimprine isn't really a playmaker with his feet, so the more time he has the better. It he has time, he'll make good decisions. If Tulane brings the pressure, mistakes will be made.
Overturn the turnover troubles
This season, the Tigers have done a great job avoiding the fumble. They've coughed it up three times on the season, losing just one. Danny Wimprine, however, has struggled with the interception. The senior has thrown at least one interception in each game for a total of nine on the season. In the loss to UAB Wimprine hit the wrong colored jersey four times. This interjection of interceptions has hurt Memphis in the giveaway/takeaway category.
The only real chance Tulane has is to create a short field for their offense. The easiest way to do that is force turnovers. If Memphis is loose with the ball, Tulane can get some cheap points and a little confidence. If Memphis takes care of the pigskin -- and creates a few turnovers of its own -- the Tigers will ride the Green Wave to a blow out win.
Ben Cowens' "Wild shot in the dark" prediction:
There is no way Memphis should lose this game. Tulane's only victory came against FAMU, a Division I-AA team from Florida. In their three games against Division I opponents, Tulane has been outscored 87-46.
The only way The U of M could falter is if they forgot how to run, pass and play defense over the bye week. The Tigers possess the most potent offense Tulane has seen thus far yet the Green Wave have given up 440 yards or more in their last three games.
If the Tigers play even a mediocre game, they'll win comfortably. If they play poorly, it could be close.
But it won't be.
