10/29: Police Beat

Tuesday, October 12

9:35 p.m.

Police responded to an attempted vehicle theft at Norriswood and Patterson. Kelly M. Scott told officers that she parked her car in U of M lot #29 across from the Panhellenic Building on Oct. 11 when she returned from work. She did not drive her vehicle on Oct. 12 and arrived at her car at approximately 9:30 p.m. to find a broken window and damaged steering column. The steering column damage resulted in electrical failure that made the vehicle undrivable. Damage was estimated at $800.

Wednesday, October 13

1:40 p.m.

Nakieta L. Jenkins filed a walk-in report at Police Services reporting a theft from the University Center. She told officers that she took her engagement ring off in the restroom to wash her hands. She left the restroom and later realized that she had left it. When she returned to the restroom, the ring was missing. Loss was estimated at $800.

Wednesday, October 13

8:11 p.m.

University Police answered a vandalism call in lot #32, 485 Patterson. Heather N. Rogers told officers that she observed three men standing near a 1998 white Ford Crown Victoria in the parking lot. When the men saw Rogers, they acted as if they were hiding something when one of them stepped in front of the vehicle's door. Police checked the area but did not locate the men.

Thursday, October 14

8 p.m.

Tiffany M. Tribbit filed a walk-in theft report at Police Services. Tribbit told officers that she left her purse on a table in the lobby of the Fogelman Building at approximately 5:30 p.m. As she was leaving her class in the auditorium, she realized that she had left the purse on the table. The purse was missing when she returned to the lobby. Loss was estimated at $60.

Friday, October 15

12:28 p.m.

Police responded to a theft call from room 125 C in the Fieldhouse, 495 Zach Curlin. Michael A. Rodrigues reported that someone stole a laptop from his office sometime between 4:15 p.m. Oct. 14 and 12 p.m. Oct. 15. He checked with everyone who had access to the room, but no one had moved the computer. Rodrigues did not have the computer's serial number at the time of this report. Loss was estimated at $1,500.

Saturday, October 16

12:53 p.m.

Two University Police officers responded to a theft call at 3800 Southern. Police arrived and found four male juveniles changing the tire on a 1994 GMC truck. The responding officers made contact with the suspects and began conducting field interviews. Three of the subjects fled the scene. Police apprehended them, charged the juveniles with auto theft and transported them to the criminal justice center at 201 Poplar.

Saturday, October 16

3:15 p.m.

David W. Shires approached a University Police officer at the northeast end of the South lot at 3825 Southern. He reported that several items had been stolen from his 1995 white GMC truck. He parked his vehicle on Oct. 13 at approximately 11 p.m. He returned to his vehicle at 3:15 p.m. on Oct. 16 and discovered that someone had picked the lock on the passenger side door and stolen his stereo system. Loss was estimated at $400.

Monday, October 17

11:49 a.m.

Matthew E. Ball reported a theft to Police Services. Ball told officers that at the end of the spring 2004 semester on approximately May 9, he left two chairs, a design table and approximately six pieces of art work in room #208 of the Communications and Fine Arts building. When Ball returned for the fall semester, on approximately August 30, the items were missing. Loss was estimated at $1,200.

Wednesday, October 19

11:40 a.m.

Shaakira L. Cook filed a theft report at Police Services. She told officers that she left her purse in room #323 in Patterson Hall on Oct. 14 at approximately 10:05 a.m. When she returned on Oct. 15 at 9:30 a.m. she retrieved her purse but discovered that several items were missing. Loss was estimated at $615.

Thursday, October 20

1:36 p.m.

Robert A. Woods arrived at Police Services to report a theft from HPER, 620 Echles. He reported that while he was playing basketball, someone stole his cell phone from his bag. Mr. Woods told officers that he was going to cancel his phone and drop off the most recent bill for investigations. Loss was estimated at $60.

Friday, October 21

5:25 p.m.

Police answered a theft from HPER, 620 Echles. Douglas A. Gorin told officers that he left his wallet inside a locked locker in the men's locker room between 4:30 and 5 p.m. this date. When he returned, the wallet was missing. Loss was estimated at $62.

Saturday, October 22

11:14 a.m.

Police responded to a vandalism call in the Zach Curlin north lot #50, 340 Zach Curlin. Aaron T. Parker told officers that he parked his 1995 red Jeep Cherokee at 8:20 a.m. this date. When he returned at 11:05 a.m. he found that the driver's door lock was missing and door was damaged around where the lock had been. Parker reported nothing missing and said that the vehicle's interior appeared undisturbed. He told officers that the lock had been defective anyway and the removal of the lock would not have allowed entry to the vehicle. Damage was estimated at $450.

Saturday, October 22

4:20 p.m.

Police answered a vehicle theft call in the Richardson Towers parking lot, 3603 Central. Brad Barber stated that he parked his 2000 Yamaha RL6 motorcycle at 11 p.m. on Oct. 21. He chained the motorcycle to a light pole and discovered that it was missing at 4 p.m. on Oct. 22. Barber produced the title and registration for the motorcycle. Loss was estimated at $4,000.
