U of M updates its job offer Web site

After a year and a half of work, The University of Memphis hasupdated its Web site for job offers at The University.

"Every Friday, people from (Human Resources) put the new jobs ofthe week on this Web site," said Danny Linton, Web administratorfor the Division of Business and Finance Technology. "We put upjobs that pay by the hour and the salaried jobs that pay by themonth. We used to have two Web pages, one for hourly and one formonthly, and every job from The University of Memphis was includedon this. It is the most visited Web page for Business and Finance, almost half a million visits a year."

Linton said instead of a list, the Web site now contains adatabase from which all jobs are pulled.

"You used to just see a big list," he said. "Now you can viewjobs in a lot of different ways. You can choose to view facultypositions or just executive positions.

"Let's say you are just interested in jobs that pay more than $8an hour, you can do a search, and it will filter out all jobs thatpay less. Let's say you want to search only for jobs that require aBA in English. Any job returned in that search would require a BAin English."

The updates for the Web site went into effect July 1 and haveput The U of M ahead of the curve in job hunting, compared to otheruniversities that still list job as The U of M's old Web site oncedid.

"Our target for the new fiscal year was to present this toeverybody who needed it," said Margie Williams, manager ofemployment and employee relations for The U of M "I believe we areon track with this."

Williams said the site also allows users to see The U of M'scurrent standing of a particular position.

"If I apply for a job on the site, I can click the positionnumber and see when the job was last updated," she said. "I cancheck to see if they are accepting applications or if the positionhas been filled. Before, a person might have applied for a jobwithout any knowledge of whether or not the position has beenfilled. We try to keep the Web site updated as much aspossible."

The next Web site update will make it so those applying for asalary position can do all the work online.

"Those who want an hourly wage job will still have to apply inperson," said Williamson, "but those looking for salary paidpositions will soon be able to do the entire application processonline. This cuts down on postage, and it is very convenient inthat respect."

Mason Chumpia, junior biology and chemistry major, said hethinks the Web site is a useful tool in exposing The U of M to amore diverse base of people.

"This updated Web site makes it easier for people to find theposition they are most eligible for," he said. "I went on the Website recently, and I think the different ways of searching for ajob are pretty amazing."

Williams said the Web site is an excellent communicationtool.

"It gives a chance for people who are doing serious job huntingto look at many career opportunities," he said. "It's time valuedas well and helps executives and faculty members to see whatcolleges have to offer without leaving the comfort of their ownhome."
