The Educational Support Program many students visit during theschool year is open this summer, too, offering assistance to allstudents facing the challenges of summer school.
"Students should really be studying and preparing for tests andexams daily in the learning centers because of the volume and paceof summer classes," said Barbara Bekis, educational supportcoordinator.
The ESP provides tutors for the summer in a variety of subjects, including business, math and science.
The Academic Enhancement Center is another learning center thatprovides tutors for general education courses.
"The Academic Enhancement Center offers assistance in courseslike development math, geography and philosophy," said Kim Collins,ESP learning specialist. "The center also conducts seminars on aweekly basis that address academic issues such as effectiveplanning, time management and study strategies."
The ESP is fully staffed for the first summer session withexperienced tutors from previous semesters.
"Even though I am a tutor, I have been tutored before, and itwould really help students to come in everyday instead of crammingright before a test," said Demario Houston, business tutor.
The ESP will present numerous learning seminars throughout thesummer to help students prepare for their classes.
"Some students would rather go to a group session than toone-on-one tutoring to get an answer to their question about how tobe efficient and effective with their study time," Bekis said.
Today the ESP is holding a seminar in Clement Hall, Room 203 at11 a.m. called "More in Less Time," which will give students moreeffective reading and study strategies.
Two more seminars are scheduled for the first summer session, and five seminars are scheduled for the second session.
Schedules are posted around campus, or students can contact KimCollins at 678-5226 for more information.
Regular ESP tutoring hours vary from subject to subject.
The Academic Enhancement Center is open Monday through Fridayfrom 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For hours of other learning centersstudents can contact Bekis at 678-2704.
"Students can always drop by our office in 415 Mitchell Hall todiscuss their academic concerns," said Collins. "We are willing tosupport and help them in any way."
