ROTC vies for Commander's Cup

The best of the best of The University of Memphis' ROTCdivisions met on Memorial Field Tuesday to compete in this year'sCommander's Cup.

The Commander's Cup, an annual event held in Memorial Field nearthe Elma Roane Field House, pits the Navy ROTC, Air Force ROTC andthe Army ROTC against each other in four sporting events. Theevents are Gator Football, Tug-of-War, a 4-mile relay and theCommander's Chariot Race.

The event is one way ROTC members relieve stress, ROTC officialssaid.

"We do PTs all the time, so this is a nice break from all ofthat," said Mid-Shipman Matt Horton, Navy ROTC. "Plus, we get tomiss class."

But missing class wasn't the real prize for these futuresoldiers and reservists -- the winner gets bragging rights.

At times, tempers flared and competitive spirits took over asthe men and women vied for the cup. But sportsmanship prevailed aseach division cheered on their teammates and congratulated eachevent's winners.

Cup winners will be announced today.
