In recognition of National Minority Law School RecruitmentMonth, some University of Memphis student organizations are hostinga law school workshop for minorities.
The national event will focus on educating minorities on the lawschool admission process, said Yolanda Ingram, U of M law schoolassistant dean of student affairs.
"It was started to increase awareness among minority groupsbecause (minorities are) under-represented (in the legalprofession)," Ingram said. "The number of minorities is notreflective of society's percentage of minorities."
Although enrollment is up at the Cecil C. Humphreys School ofLaw, only a small percentage of minorities account for theincrease.
Of students enrolled in The U of M's law school, 14 percent areof a minority, said SueAnn McClellan, U of M dean of lawadmissions, recruitment and scholarships.
In addition to preparing students for the admissions process, the workshop will cover the best ways to prepare for law school, such as enrolling in undergraduate classes that enhance criticalthinking and logical reasoning skills and getting involved inactivities like internships, shadowing opportunities and pre-lawassociations.
The workshop will be held Saturday, Feb. 21, from 9 a.m. to noonin the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, Room 252.
Speakers at the event will provide insight on the presentationof law school applications, the importance of undergraduate GPAs,letters of recommendation and preparation for the Law SchoolAdmission Test.

"We will also have attorneys from the (Memphis) area speaking tostudents about what it's like to be a lawyer and the careeropportunities that are out there in the legal profession," Ingramsaid.
