Unlike students, University of Memphis faculty and staff can nowavoid long lines at the Bursar's Office for ID cards, as they arenow supplied by the less-frequented Human Resources Department inAdministration Building, Room 159.
"It wasn't a big deal when we (Human Resources) were in Jones(Hall) and the Bursar was in the Administration Building," saidMary Ann Camp, assistant vice president for Human Resources.
However, after the Bursar's Office relocated to Wilder Tower,Room 115, last year, Human Resources officials decided to savefaculty and staff a hike halfway across campus, they said, addingthat the number of students getting IDs made slowed down thefaculty and staff.
"All new staff and faculty have to come to (the AdministrationBuilding) anyway," Camp said.
Having it all in one building streamlines the process foreveryone, she said.
However, student ID cards are still only available in theBursar's Office in Wilder Tower.
"Wilder is where all the students go anyway," Camp said.
But the location for getting a student ID may also change in thenear future, said William Akey, assistant vice provost forEnrollment Services.
Bursar Libby Shelton proposed to move the ID station out of theBursar's Office and into a location more accessible to students, asyet undecided.
"The Bursar's Office is a tough place to navigate," Akey said."Especially for (students) wanting to get their IDs and getout."
"During the busy times, there can be as many as 25 or 30students waiting," said Revon Thaxter, assistant student financialservices manager.
Thaxter even had to postpone her interview Thursday with TheDaily Helmsman, as students began pouring into the Bursar'sOffice.
One suggestion is to put the ID station in the Registrar'sOffice, providing an opportunity for students to receive their IDsduring orientation.
"We'll figure out what's the best situation for the students,"Akey said.
Discussions on where the new ID station will be could begin asearly as Monday, he said.
The University stopped printing social security numbers on IDcards several years ago amid growing concern over identity theft. Those who have one of the older cards with the social securitynumber still printed on it can replace it for no charge.
Lost faculty or staff ID cards can be replaced for $5 inAdministration Building, Room 159. Any faculty or staff member whoneeds a replacement ID should go to the Human Resources Office onFridays, Camp suggests. Processing newly hired employees occupiesthe office's time early in the week, she said.
