A former University of Memphis student and law school graduatereturns to The University as the development director of twoUniversity areas, University officials announced last week.
Ginger Jordan, named the new development director for the HerffCollege of Engineering and the School of Audiology andSpeech-Language Pathology Jan. 15, said she will use herexperiences as both an undergraduate and law school student torelate to students and the community while raising money for bothdepartments.
As development director, many of Jordan's duties will focus onraising funds for both students and faculty.
"My experiences as a student worker and graduate assistant willhelp me to deal with other graduates while raising funds forscholarships and professorships," Jordan said.
Jordan was admitted to the Tennessee Bar Association in 1990after receiving her law degree from the Cecil C. Humphreys Schoolof Law that year. Jordan earned her bachelor's degree in journalismfrom The U of M in 1987.
Jordan's familiarity with The University community will alsoserve as a great asset in her new position, she said.
"The connections I made and the experiences I had while at TheUniversity of Memphis have helped me better understand the cultureand community on campus," Jordan said.
One of her first initiatives will be to raise scholarship fundsfor graduate students of the School of Audiology andSpeech-Language Pathology.
The school has recently launched a new development campaignaimed at helping ease the tuition burden for audiology and speechpathology students, department officials said.
"We are working on a major scholarship campaign geared towardthe graduate students in our program. The fund raising started lastyear, and our immediate project is to rejuvenate this campaign,"said Maurice Mendel, School of Audiology and Speech-LanguagePathology dean.
Jordan, who worked in a similar capacity before joining The U ofM faculty, was previously the director of communications andplanned giving and the development officer at St. Agnes Academy andSt. Dominic School in Memphis.
Prior to her work in development, Jordan was a practicingattorney with the Memphis law firm Arnold M. Weiss.
Jordan said she was drawn back to her alma mater because of herlove for The University and all it has given her.
"Under Dr. Raines' leadership, this is a great time fordevelopment opportunities at The U of M," Jordan said. "I hope Ican give back something to an institution that has given me somuch."
