First-day wreck injures two

Two people were injured in a Monday afternoon car crashinvolving a University of Memphis police officer, according to U ofM police officials.

The accident involved a University police cruiser driven byOfficer Marco Anderson and a car driven by an unidentified womanbelieved to be a student at The University, according to TheUniversity of Memphis Police Services .

Witnesses said the accident occurred as the police cruiser,traveling southbound on Patterson Avenue, collided with the vehicledriven by the woman as she made a left hand turn into the officer'spath. Although U of M police officers said Officer Anderson wasusing his emergency sirens when the accident occurred, it is stillunclear exactly who was at fault.

"Because the accident involved a University police officer,Memphis city police will conduct the investigation," said Maj. RayCraft, U of M Police Services.

The accident was still under investigation by the Memphis CityPolice Department's Traffic Division Monday afternoon.

Although the injuries sustained by Anderson and the unidentifiedwoman were said to be non-critical, both were taken for emergencytreatment.

Anderson was transported to the Regional Medical Center atMemphis.

"He was talking and seemed in the right frame of mind," Craftsaid.

Anderson sustained a broken leg, and doctors were runningseveral tests Monday afternoon, including a CT scan, which isnormal procedure in a car accident, Craft said. The woman was alsotransported to a hospital, but University police officials did nothave any information as to her injuries.

"From what we can tell, nothing appeared critical," Craft said."The relatives of both people involved have been notified about theaccident."
