R.C.'s job description

Last week, McDonald's got mad about the newest word entered inthe Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. The term "McJob" isdefined as "low paying and dead-end work."

U of M Athletic Director, R.C. Johnson may soon get mad aboutthe newest word entered in my University of Memphis Dictionary. Theterm "RcJob" is defined as "high paying and sluggish work."

Johnson has proven that being U of M Athletic Director is quitepossibly the easiest job you can have. It seems that all you haveto do as athletic director is hire a well-known, big timebasketball coach. Then, let that coach run your department whileyou sit around and remind people that you hired him.

Sure, John Calipari is a great coach who wants to see ourbasketball program succeed. But, Coach Cal should not have thepower to dictate the future of other Tiger sports and long timeTiger traditions.

R.C. Johnson has not done anything productive for thisuniversity since the last time I had an RC Cola.

Johnson's last good action came after the 2000 football seasonwhen he promoted Tommy West to head coach.

Since then, the Tigers have sat back and watched everyone alongwith their grandmother leave Conference USA. All the while, R.C.has yet to accept the invitation to play Tiger basketball at theFedExForum.

Now, The University of Tennessee wants to cancel all futurefootball games with The University of Memphis as soon as nextyear's scheduled game at the Liberty Bowl.

On Monday, both the Presidents of UT and The U of M asked theirrespective athletic directors to work this situation out with aconclusion that would continue the cross-state sports rivalry.

It is up to R.C. Johnson to save this fan pleasing and moneymaking series. In order to succeed, he may have to take off his"What Would Cal Do?" bracelet for the negotiations.

We need UT.

As hard as it is to read, it is even harder to write. It may behardest to say. Though, it is pretty easy to spell.

It only makes dollars and sense to have the two biggest collegesports schools in the state compete against each other in the twobiggest college sports.

Knoxvegas is home of Neyland Stadium, a strong football team, and music superstar Kenny Chesney. The Bluff City is home of ThePyramid, a strong basketball team, and music superstar JustinTimberlake.

The rivalry goes way back. It is fun for the fans.It isguaranteed money for the athletic programs. It needs tocontinue.

Now go register for classes and GO TIGERS!
