RHA reveals October's movies -- list should appeal to every movie watcher

A new feature of residence life means no more movie or DVDrentals for University of Memphis residents.

The Residence Life and Dining Services Department's channel 64and Residence Hall Association and Telecommunication's channel 50have gotten together to give residents their own movie theatre intheir dorm rooms.

The U of M has provided residents with basic cable and, byadding two different movie channels, made it more convenient forstudents who missed certain movies they wanted to see when theywere in the theaters.

"I am a broke college student, so going to the movies is out thequestion," sophomore Monica Washington said. "But I usually get tosee movies on channel 50 or 64 that I didn't get a chance to see atthe movie theater."

Not only do the movie channels show different movies, theyfeature special events and functions on campus.

The U of M information channels are included in the basic cablepackage, along with a Residence Life channel, which advertisescoming campus events.

Residence Life Cinema will also have instant emergencyinformation and updates from the Department of Public Safety.

Movies are selected on a monthly basis of many title selectionscoming from a RHA student committee.

Administrative secretary Patty Short said residents get a chanceto see old and new releases.

"All 40 titles are chosen primarily by vote at the RHAmeetings," Short said. "Titles are also chosen based upon themonth/time of year. For example, horror movies for Halloween."

The movies air Monday through Friday at 1 p.m., 4 p.m., 7 p.m.,10 p.m. and 1 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4p.m., 7 p.m., 10 p.m. and 1 a.m.

"Each month we try to show a variety of titles that will appealto a broad audience," Short said. "We will show titles that are newreleases as well as comedy, action and suspense, drama, international films, horror, musicals and family films."

But for those who have heard the rumor that U of M residents canhave other cable channels like HBO or Showtime, hooked to theirtelevision, it's not true.

"It can not be connected throughout the campus," according toThe U of M telecommunications department.
