Dell may spell "deal" for students who want computers

Students who think a new computer is out of their financialgrasp may be able to find an answer in Dell.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dell representatives will be atThe University of Memphis to promote their product line andinstruct students in purchasing Dell systems.

Dell Day, set to take place in the Faulkner Lounge on the thirdfloor of the University Center, is intended to "promote students'awareness of what Dell has to offer," said Mark Reavis, associatedirector of Network Services.

Based on a direct-to-customer sales model in which consumersessentially "build" their own computers, Dell boasts high qualityand satisfaction for a low price.

With desktop models starting at under $500 (without a monitor),Dell's systems are already among the most affordable homecomputers.

The company's partnership with the Tennessee Board of Regents,The U of M's governing body, provides "a way to give studentsadditional savings" beyond what other consumers receive, Reavissaid.

Since 2001, students, faculty and staff at all TBR institutions, including The University of Memphis, have been eligible for a 5- to10-percent discount on the best advertised price of select Dellmodels, depending on the season.

Though students won't be able to buy a computer at Dell Day,they can configure, purchase -- and finance -- systems by visitingDell's Web site, accessible via http://www.memphis.edu/dell/.The site is updated daily to include current offers, features andpromotions.
