U of M door-decorating contest returns to encourage school spirit

In an effort to increase school spirit across campus duringHomecoming Week, The University of Memphis will hold the secondannual door-decorating contest.

The Residence Hall Association and Aramark are co-sponsoringthis year's Office Decorating Day for U of M Homecoming 2003.

Each department and administrative office is encouraged toparticipate by decorating their main office inside and out usingthis year's theme -- "Defenders of the Den."

The winning department will receive complimentary lunch for 12delivered to the office.

"Last year, a group of Resident Hall Association students cameup with the idea to help encourage school spirit," said CharlesDaniels, senior communications major and RHA president.

The RHA started the new tradition last year on a small scale,with a few departments and offices participating. The Office ofAcademic Counseling took the prize in 2002 and feasted on barbecuewith all the trimmings.

This year, RHA already has three times as many participantssigned up.

All participants must register and complete decorations by Sept.29 to be eligible for judging that day at 3 p.m.

Judges will include Kwesi Beserai, RHA co-advisor, and JamicaClements, a junior business major and RHA vice president. Thewinner will be announced during Homecoming Week.
