If you haven't been out to the Elma Roane Field House to checkout the University of Memphis women's volleyball team, you arereally missing out.
Due to teamwork, The U of M is off to its best start since 2001with a 10-1 record and great play by Conference USA player of theweek Heather Watts.
Watts earned her second career player of the week award afterdefeating in- state rival UT-Martin.
Watts posted an impressive 175 assists, 8 blocks, 41 digs and a.394 hitting percentage.
Watts also passed the 2,000 career assist mark and the 100 acesmark.
Not only did she earn her second player of the week award, Wattsalso received her second straight tournament-MVP award.
When asked about how winning her second player of the weekaward, Watts just smiled and said, "It feels good."
When it comes to this team and its goals, the players seem to beall business.
"This is a totally different team from last year," Watts said."We all work together as a team."
Playing together as a team is what they are going to have to doin order to reach their goals such as making the NCAA tournamentand winning the C-USA tournament according to Watts.
Head coach Carrie Yerty said that the reason for the Tigersearly success is because of experience and new players coming inand contributing.
"In terms of leadership," Yerty said, "we've got several playersthat have really contributed."
The Tigers, which finished 19-15 last year, seem to have made abig leap in terms of finishing off opponents.
Yerty said the biggest difference from last year is the offenseand teamwork.
"I think that offensively we are more balanced," Yerty said. "Itruly believe that its going to be hard for any person on our teamto have more than 1400 attempts this year because of the balance,which is what we need."
The Tigers are on a seven match winning streak and will try toextend that number to eight tonight in the Birmingham SouthernTournament against host team BSU. Birmingham Southern is 3-4overall this season.
After BSU, the Lady Tigers will face ACC opponent North CarolinaState (5-5) Friday at 11 a.m., followed up by Saturday gamesagainst Wofford (3-4) and South Alabama (1-6).
If the Lady Tigers manage to improve their record this weekend,it would be the best start in school history.
