For seniors who wish to do research in a foreign country, twoprestigious scholarships are up for the grabbing.
The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship and the Fulbright Grant aretwo awards open to students completing research in a foreigncountry, said Rebecca Laumann, University of Memphis study abroaddirector.
"Most of the students who you will hear receiving a Fulbrightare Ph.D. students working on their dissertation, " said DanielUnowsky, assistant history professor and Fulbright recipient.
Although the Fulbright Grant is predominately awarded todoctoral students, it is also available to undergraduate graduatingseniors.
But both sets of applicants have to develop a program andexplain how the study abroad experience will enhance theirintellectual lives, Unowsky said.
The Rotary Scholarship is being offered through the Rotary Clubof Memphis, and like the Fulbright scholarship, the Rotary Club islooking for graduate students or graduating seniors who will bedoing research in foreign countries.
The Rotary Scholarship's application process takes two years, sostudents who are interested in applying must prepare two years inadvance, said Taylor Hughes, executive director of the MemphisRotary Club.
Students should learn about both scholarships as freshmen tocultivate strong references from their professors, earn a stronggrade point average and prepare for the application process,Laumann said.
For undergraduate students interested in studying abroad for theexperience, not to do research, The U of M Study Abroad Scholarshipis available. Depending on the length of the study abroad program,the award amount varies from $500 up to $1,000.
The Study Abroad Scholarship is awarded by the InternationalPrograms office and can be a good complement to other scholarshipsfor school or personal expenses, Laumann said.
There are also other, more specific scholarships depending onthe country of destination and the major of the students whoapplying.
