Seniors may not graduate if dates are not remembered

The countdown has begun for students preparing to graduate thisschool year, but there are some dates to remember.

"The deadline to checkout for (May) graduation is Nov. 12. Allgraduation analysts are adhering to this deadline," said LaurieSnyder, college advisor.

Checkout refers to the steps seniors need to take in order tograduate on time. At the forefront of the requirements is thatstudents take the senior test, a general education examinationmandated by the Tennessee Board of Regents. Snyder said there areseveral seniors who have waited too late to sign up for the testand some have yet to sign up at all, leaving them with a toughbreak when it comes to diploma time.

"I will not certify you if you haven't taken the test," Snydersaid.

The only exceptions for the test being waived are if a studenthas already earned a degree, is not a U.S. citizen or has obtaineda waiver from Student Disability services.

Snyder strongly encourages students to schedule a meeting withtheir college's graduation analyst a year to one semester beforetheir expected graduation date to make sure they are on the righttrack. At the meeting, the student will look at a degree audit, which is a list of completed classes, current classes and remainingclasses.

Another task students must remember to take care of is gettingtranscripts from other schools to The University in an ample amountof time.

Many U of M students decide to take their general educationcourses at a junior college. While most of the courses willtransfer, "it is the student's responsibility to get thattranscript sent to The University of Memphis. It is notautomatically sent," Snyder said. Transfer credit request forms areavailable in Wilder Tower, Room 103.

Some students are required to take The University's generaleducation test as well as a test from their department.

Mary Lanier, a graduation analyst for the College of Education, said students scheduled to graduate in December 2003 have been veryinefficient when it came to taking the two required tests.

"Signs (with test dates and deadlines) are posted in eachbuilding and also on the tigerweb.memphis.edu Web site," shesaid.

It is the student's responsibility -- not the advisor's -- tofind out when the tests will take place, Lanier added.

The students who have not fulfilled the graduation requirementswill be certified one semester later than their expected graduationdate.
