New society of U of M benefactors inducts first members next week

The Society of the Shield, a new society of University ofMemphis benefactors, will induct its first members at TheUniversity of Memphis Society awards dinner next week.

Approximately 170 donors have been invited to the dinner at theKemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort ManagementThursday, Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m.

Each contributor will be presented with a large engraved plaquedisplaying The University's new academic shield, designed in honorof The U of M's 90th anniversary.

Bert Bornblum and Bobby Wharton will be among the members of theSociety of the Shield recognized for their contributions of morethan $10,000 to The University.

Both inductees share a firm belief that supporting highereducation, particularly at The University of Memphis, is anecessary investment in the future.

Bornblum and his brother David founded the University College'sJudaic studies program, which bares the brothers' namesake andfocuses on Jewish history, religion, language, politics andtradition.

"The University is very important to the City of Memphis,"Bornblum said. "People should get together and support it."

Wharton, owner of G & W Diesel Inc. and Pro-Fire Equipment,has endowed a professorship in the Herff College of Engineering andremains active in academic and athletic affairs.

"I graduated from The University of Memphis. It means a lot tome," said Wharton, who considers his support "a small way I can saythank you and give back to my university.

"Every university is no better than the support of its alumni.Every graduate needs to support the university and college theyattended."

The UMS will also recognize current and former faculty andadministrators for extraordinary service to The University.

Donald K. Carson, former vice president for Student Affairs andvice provost for Enrollment Services, will be honored with the 2002Walter A. Barret Distinguished Service Award for his extensivecommitment to The U of M.

Nancy Simco, professor and philosophy department chair, will berecognized as Educator of the Year for her efforts to bringnational and international recognition to the department.
