Graduate and Professional School Fair offers U of M students a look at variety of post-graduation options

The schools at the Graduate and Professional School FairThursday will cover a gamut of points through the United States,including Hawaii Pacific University, Florida State University,University of Mississippi and Ball State.

The fair will feature a large variety of schools, with 80 to 90schools represented at the fair, said Clay Woemmel, assistantdirector of U of M Career and Employment Services.

Everyone is welcome to attend the fair, and some are evenencouraged to attend.

"If a student is thinking about graduate school, it's good tostart early-planning it," Woemmel said.

In 2002, 13.3 percent of students who received a bachelor'sdegree from The U of M went to graduate school, and 6.5 percent ofstudents who graduated with a master's degree continued towardreceiving another master's.

A few of the visiting schools will have several differentgraduate programs represented, such as Emory University with twoand The U of M with 10.

The U of M will have graduate programs in areas includingEnglish, physics, business and economics and law school.

The U of M's graduate programs will vie for students at the fairagainst schools like North Carolina State University and St. LouisUniversity.

"Many U of M graduates have family in this area and want to stayclose to home," said Woemmel, revealing a deciding factor in wheremany students attend graduate school.

However, location isn't the only reason students go to The U ofM for their master's degree.

"A number of U of M graduate programs are nationally ranked,"Woemmel said.

Whether you're interested in law, social work or becoming achiropractor, the fair will have a school that pertains to yourarea of interest.

The Cleveland College of Chiropractic L.A. and Tulane Universityof Social Work will be there, and among the numerous law schoolswill be University of Tennessee School of Law, Northern IllinoisCollege of Law and Loyola University of New Orleans Law School.

There will not be a shortage of schools representing the medicalfield. The University of Arkansas Medical Sciences and the SouthernCalifornia University of Health Sciences are a couple of theschools to be represented.

Students interested in theology have the Divine MethodistTheological School, Louisville Presbyterian Theological andPittsburgh Theological Seminary to examine.

With such a wide variety of graduate and professional schools atthe fair, chances are most students will find a school that fitsthem.
