All work and no play can make for a dull college experience.
A variety of organizations on campus work hard to make sure you are rarely bored.
Chrisandra Knowles, sophomore nursing major, said she believes student involvement can lead to a great start your freshman year in college.
"After arriving to the campus my freshman year, I had no idea what to do around campus," Knowles said. "I thought I would be bored out of my mind and would only have to focus only on academics. After attending a fair presented by Student Activities, I learned about different organizations, and it made my freshman year memorable."
According to Registered Students Organizations, more than 150 groups exist at The University of Memphis, reflecting the diverse nature of the student body.
Organizations like religious groups, military, honor societies, residence life and sports and recreation are only a few of the groups to choose from when coming to campus.
Being involved on campus allows students to meet new people and develop friendships, contribute to the community, learn and practice leadership skills and have fun all at the same time.
Extra curricular activities help students develop important interpersonal and organizational skills and gain experience.
April Dandridge, senior advertising major, said on-campus involvement allowed her to develop leadership skills that have made her a better candidate in the work place when she graduates.
"My experience as a student leader on campus has developed my communication and leadership skills, which has give me the confidence that will help me advance in my field after graduation," Dandridge said.
Students who want to become active can go to the Registered Student Organization office located in the University Center room 425 or contact the office at 678-2035 for more information.
Students become involved in activities for many different reasons and in many different ways. What they gain from the experience depends upon what they join and their level of commitment and contribution.
